      Children's Lantern Procession 2019

Would your children like to take part in a wonderful festive Durham tradition - the Children's Lantern Procession? The annual Children's Lantern Procession is a highlight of Durham Christmas Festival!  As dusk falls, 300 children bearing lanterns walk from the Market Place to Durham Cathedral, lead by the Chester-le-Street Salvation Army Band, playing traditional carols.   The children arrive at Durham Cathedral in time for the St Nicholas Service, and afterwards, as they exit the Cathedral, enjoy a spectacular display of fire-eating on Palace Green. For many, this is the start to their family's Christmas season. Lanterns are recommended for children up to age 12, and the children take their lantern home with them after the parade.  Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult, and often whole families join the procession and the St Nicholas Service.   Lanterns cost £6 (this charge includes Eventbrite's fee).  There is no limit on the number of lanterns any individual can reserve.  IMPORTANT; PLEASE BRING THE EMAIL CONFIRMATION WHEN COLLECTING YOUR LANTERN(S).  Lanterns can be collected from 3pm on the day in Durham Market Place.  The lanterns contain a battery operated light, and can be taken into the Cathedral, and the children take them home with them after the procession. The event is open to all - only the lanterns need to be pre-booked as there are a limited number available.
