The RSC Newcastle upon Tyne & North East Coast Local Section and Newcastle University STEM Outreach presents: The 9th Annual Kilcoyne Christmas Lecture "Chemistry Energy: from Steam to Nuclear Power" Dr Mark Read (University of Birmingham) This demonstration lecture will consider the chemistry involved in the production and harnessing of energy. From Thomas Newcomen's first successful steam engine in the world, used to pump water from coal mines of Lord Dudley's estates in 1712, to modern day nuclear electricity generating power stations - and a lot more along the way. The important role of chemists in developing new materials that convert energy more efficiently and in a less polluting manner will be highlighted when considering energy materials for the future. Please be aware there will be bright flashes and/or loud bangs during some of the demonstrations. This talk is suitable for all ages (although very young children with sensitive ears might not like the louder explosions). Dr Mark Read is a Senior Lecturer in Computational Solid State Chemistry and a member of the Birmingham Centre for Nuclear Education and Research. There will also be some Newcastle University Street Scientists in attendance for the hour (1700-1800) before the evening Public Lecture to entertain and amaze the audience with their science busking activities! Two performances: Wednesday 18th December at 2.00pm primarily for a block-booked 6th form/schools audience; Wednesday 18th December at 6.00pm for both schools and the general public.
