      Talking Art with Judith Stevenson: October - December 2019

      Our in-house historian, Judith Stevenson, returns with a 10 week series of drop in talks that will tackle art, design and culture. The talks will explore the cultural significance and thought behind some facinating subjects held in Gosforth Civic Theatre's intimate theatre. Each talk is £4. About Judith Judith Stevenson has been teaching art, film and design history since 2003. She has worked at Northumbria University, Newcastle College and the North East Centre for Lifelong Learning. She has also taught at Monash University, University of Melbourne and the Incinerator Gallery in Melbourne, Australia. The Talks Thu 3 Oct | Impressionist Women Impressionism from the Female Perspective - An exploration of the work of Mary Cassatt, Berthe Morisot, Jane Sutherland and others. How did they negotiate their place in the art world and in a man's world? Thu 10 Oct | Art Nouveau Heavily influenced by the natural world, Art Nouveau was a design style that spread throughout Europe and America from the 1880s up until World War One. We will look at a large range of art, architecture and design from London, Glasgow, Vienna, Brussels, Paris, New York and Barcelona. Thu 17 Oct | Art Deco From New York to Newcastle, Mumbai to Melbourne, Art Deco was a truly international style. Flourishing in the 1920s, Art Deco was initially synonymous with glamour, luxury and decadence. After the Great Depression the style was often used in mass production. It's influence was widespread and could be seen in cinemas, architecture, jewellery, ceramics, glass, transport, industrial design and graphics. Thu 7 Nov | Modernist Design Form follows function, less is more, a house is a machine for living in, Bauhaus, De Stilj and designers such as Le Corbusier,  Berthold Lubetkin and Eileen Gray all epitomise the Modern Movement in design.  Thu 28 Nov | Edward Hopper The American artist Edward Hopper created some of the most recognisable and distinctive images of the twentieth century. We will examine his work and his enduring influence on cinema and popular culture. Thu 5 Dec | Murals From Mexican Muralism to Street Art, we will look at a broad range of murals from around the world.     Thu 19 Dec | Judy Chicago The Dinner Party was a watershed moment in twentieth century art. A reclamation of women's history and a defining feminist art work. In light of her exhibition at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, we will examine her body of work.
